This year, the Auckland International Cultural Festival will take place on Sunday, 29th March, at the War Memorial Park, 13 May Road Wesley, Mt Roskill Auckland.

The Greek Community of Auckland will take part in this event for the 3rd successive year. We will be cooking and selling the traditional Greek Souvlaki which has proved to be very popular at the previous events.

We will be publishing more details as they become available.

On Saturday, 29th November, a Working Bee will take place at the community hall from 9:00am to 12:00 noon.

The objective will be to clean and tidy up all the areas around the church and community hall in preparation for the Festive Season activities.

We would need as many people as possible to participate in this activity.

Please bring any gardening tools you may want to use for weeding, planting etc.

The Auckland Classical Association presents a talk by Associate Professor Anne Mackay on Tuesday, 4 November 2008, 7.30 pm at the Old Government House, Federation of Graduate Women’s rooms.

Associate Professor Anne Mackay:  “A Real Labyrinth: Bronze Age Archaeological Sites in Crete .”  The Aegean bronze age is often regarded as the time when many Greek myths were born, and it has been suggested that the labyrinthine structures of Minoan palaces might have been the foundation of the story of how Theseus of Athens overcame the Minotaur in Knossos .  Associate Professor Anne Mackay spent some time while on study leave photographing a number of bronze age sites in Crete, and her illustrated talk will take the form of a guided tour around some of the more interesting bronze age sites that were occupied in the second millennium BC, includingwell-known places like Knossos and Phaistos, but also some of the smaller, more out-of-the-way locations.

The President of the Association Mr. Gregory J. Thwaite, extends an invitation to all the members of the Hellenic Community of Auckland, to this event.

Το καθιερωμένο ετήσιο ‘πίγκνικ’ της κοινότητας έχει διοργανωθεί για την Κυριακή 8 Φεβρουαρίου στο  Long Bay στο Χώρο 2, προκειμένου ότι ο καιρός θα είναι καλός χωρίς βροχή. Σε περίπτωση που θα βρέχει το ‘πίγκνικ’ θα ακυρωθεί.

Το πρόγραμμα όσον αφορά τις δραστηριότητες για αυτή την ημέρα είναι κάπως διαφορετικό από τα προηγούμενα χρόνια.  Συνήθως το ‘πίγκνικ’ άρχιζε γύρω στις δώδεκα το μεσημέρι και το φαγητό ήταν έτοιμο κατά τις μία (1:00 μ.μ.) το απόγευμα. Ο πιο πολλύς κόσμος παρέμενε μέχρι αργά το απόγευμα απολαμβάνοντας το περιβάλλον.

Φέτος η μόνη διαφορά θα είναι ότι η Θεία Λειτουργία για την Κυριακή 8 Φεβρουαρίου θα διεξαχθεί στο χώρο του ‘πίγκνικ’. Θα αρχίσει στις 10:15 το πρωί και θα τελειώσει στις 11:45 π.μ. Έτσι, όσοι σχεδίαζαν να πήγαιναν στην εκκλησία για να παρακολουθήσουν τη Θεία Λειτουργία θα μπορέσουν να πάνε κατ’ ευθείαν στο χώρο. Ελπίζουμε να έχουμε πιο μεγάλη συμμετοχή εφ’όσον η διαδικασία γι’ αυτούς που θα ήθελαν να πάνε στην εκκλησία απλοποιείτε κάπως. Όπως γινόταν τα προηγούμενα χρόνια έτσι και φέτος το BBQ θα είναι έτοιμο γύρω στις μία (1:00 μ.μ) το απόγευμα.

Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Κοινότητας θα προσφέρει δωρεάν κρέας και λουκάνικα τα οποία θα μαγειρευτούν στο BBQ. Όσοι θα συμμετέχουν θα πρέπει να φέρουν ότι άλλα φαγητά θα θέλουν να φάνε και πιοτά.

Επίσης θα διοργανωθούν διάφορα παιχνίδια στα οποία θα μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος μικροί και μεγάλοι.

Ελπίζουμε να δούμε όλα τα μέλη της κοινότητάς μας εκεί.

The community summer picnic has been organised for Sunday, 8th February 2009, at Long Bay, Site 2. This activity will take place as planned, unless the weather is wet, in which case it will be canceled.

The programme this year will be slightly different from previous years. In the past, the site was available from 11.00 am and people began arriving around midday and the BBQ was ready by 1:00 pm. Most of the participants used to stay until late afternoon and well into the evening enjoying the outdoors.

This year the difference is that the Divine Liturgy which usually takes place at the church will be contacted at the picnic site. This was arranged so that it will hopefully make it easier for the pople who want to attend the church service to also attend the picnic. The church service will begin at 10:15 am and it will finish by 11:45 am. The BBQ will be ready around 1:00pm as in previous years.

The Executive Committee of the Community will provide cooked steak and sausages free of charge for all the members. All the participants should bring along any other food and drinks they’d want to consume.

Also, we will be arranging various outdoor games which will be suitable for both young and old.

We look forward to seeing all our Community members there.

Annual General Meeting for 2008 – The AGM which was originally scheduled for Sunday, 28th September 2008 has been re-scheduled. It will now take place on Sunday, 12th October at 12.00 noon. The meeting will commence half an hour after the conclusion of the “Theia Litourgia” (chuch service). It is very important that all members attend this meeting.

There will two more Greek Dancing Classes this month held at the Greek Community Hall – the first one will be on Thursday, 4 September, at 7.45pm, and the second one on Thursday, 18th of September at 7:45pm, which will also be the last one until further notice.
